Behind the closed doors of Telangana-based Palamur Biosciences Pvt Ltd—a government-registered contract laboratory that tests drugs, pesticides, and medical devices on animals, often for foreign clients—and breeds beagles, lies shocking cruelty. PETA India’s exposé of this major contract laboratory, self-proclaimed as “one of the largest preclinical service providers” in India, is the country’s first-of-its kind. Thanks to whistleblowers, PETA India can reveal a facility where bloodied beagles lie on the floor, minipigs are poisoned, and rhesus macaques are killed.
Following an inspection that took place in the two days after PETA India released this exposé, a central government appointed inspection committee has recommended ‘immediate regulatory action…including the removal and rehabilitation of animals in order to prevent further pain and suffering’ as well as a review of Palamur Biosciences’ registration and breeding license status through an explosive report.
PETA India has filed a fresh petition before the Delhi High Court seeking the immediate rehabilitation and release of 73 beagles and other animals eligible for rehabilitation from Palamur Biosciences after they continued to be confined at the facility despite being identified for rehabilitation. While the matter is now before the court, the Committee for the Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CCSEA) must also act to ensure that these animals are transferred without further delay to reputed nongovernmental organisations willing to care for and adopt them out, and fulfil its statutory mandate to protect animals used in experiments.
YOU CAN HELP!
Join PETA India in urging CCSEA authorities to rescue and rehabilitate the 73 beagles and other animals eligible for rehabilitation who are suffering at Palamur Biosciences, immediately transfer them to reputed nongovernmental organisations, permanently shut down all animal testing projects at that laboratory, and rescind the facility’s permission to breed and use animals.
