Some states are cracking down on illegal slaughterhouses and for good reason: There are an estimated 30,000 unlicensed and illegal slaughterhouses in India. That's why the governments in Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan have taken initiatives to shut down slaughterhouses that torture animals and break the law , but what about other states?
PETA was involved with a Supreme Court case against routine illegal transportation and killing of animals in slaughterhouses from 2004 to 2017 and provided extensive documentation of animals headed for the slaughterhouse on trucks that are so crowded that the animals often suffocate or sustain broken bones, which is illegal. Others are forced to walk the entire way to the slaughterhouse while handlers smear chili pepper and tobacco into their eyes or break their tails to keep the tired animals moving. Slaughterhouse workers typically slit animals' throats in full view of other animals, which is also a violation of law.
In February 2017, the Supreme Court rightfully ordered all state governments and union territories to comply with the compendium of Indian acts and rules prepared by the government of India , but only a handful of states have made progress so far.
