Help Animals Suffering Because of Weak Cruelty Penalties

Rupees 50 is the maximum penalty under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act,1960. This paltry fine fails to act as a deterrence for those who cause harm to animals. Recently, the crucial provisions criminalising acts of sexual abuse against animals were ended under the revised law – Bharatiya Nyaya (Second) Sanhita, 2023.

Dogs are poisoned, cows have been burned with acid, and countless other animals across India are abused every day including subjected to sexual violence – and the current penalties are often not enough to deter people who abuse animals.

India’s most vulnerable beings are suffering because of weak penalties- and reduced legal protection. Please join us in demanding a comprehensive, stronger law with harsh punishments for animal abusers by signing our appeal below.

The compiled signatures will be delivered to the Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying.

Appeal

Respected Minister,

Numerous incidents of cruelty to animals in India, each more shocking than the last, are frequently reported by media outlets. Dogs are poisoned, cows have been burned with acid, and countless other animals across the country are abused including sexually victimised- every day.

Yet people convicted of such crimes often pay only a paltry Rs 50 fine under the archaic law, The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 or will no longer be punished due to the recent amendment in law under the Bharatiya Nyaya (Second) Sanhita, 2023.

Research shows that people who commit acts of cruelty to animals are often repeat offenders who move on to hurting other animals, including humans. Steps must be taken for preventing violence against animals and the society at large- by strengthening India’s animal protection laws and penalties for animal abusers.

I respectfully ask that you show that cruelty to animals won’t be tolerated by ensuring that people found guilty of it receive jail time, significant fines, and counselling and are forbidden to have contact with animals.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

Sincerely,
