Help Animals Suffering Because of Weak Cruelty Penalties

Rupees 50 is the maximum penalty under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act,1960. This paltry fine fails to act as a deterrent to those who cause harm to animals.

Dogs are poisoned, cows have been burned with acid, and countless other animals across India are abused every day including subjected to sexual violence – and the current penalties are often not enough to prevent humans from mistreating animals.

The most vulnerable living, feeling beings in India are suffering because of weak penalties- and reduced legal protection. Please join us in calling for a comprehensive and stronger law involving harsher punishments for animal abusers by signing our appeal below.

The compiled signatures will be delivered to the Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying.

Appeal

Dear Honourable Minister,

Numerous incidences of cruelty to animals in India, each often more shocking than the last, are frequently reported by media outlets. Dogs are poisoned, cows have been burned with acid, and countless other animals across the country are abused including by being sexually assaulted, every day.

Yet those convicted of such crimes are often only required to pay a paltry Rs 50 fine under the archaic law set out in The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.

Research shows that those who commit acts of cruelty to animals are often repeat offenders who move on to hurting other animals, including humans. Steps must be taken to prevent violence against animals and safeguard society at large by strengthening India’s animal protection laws and penalties for animal abusers.

I respectfully request that you show that cruelty to animals won’t be tolerated by ensuring that those found guilty of such egregious acts receive jail time, significant fines, and counselling and are forbidden from having contact with animals.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

Sincerely,
